Swiss City Guide: 5 Things to do in Basel

Basel is one of the most underrated cities in Switzerland. It offers so many historical buildings and a lot more things to discover. In this Swiss City Guide: 5 Things to do in Basel I will show 5 exciting things to do on your next trip to Basel. Basel is a huge city compared to other cities in Switzerland. Therefore there is a lot more to explore. But for a short stay, I would recommend the 5 listed things below.

1. BASLER MÜNSTER, CATHERDRALE

If you walk through the City of Basel you can’t miss the Basel Münster. You will be able to see it from far away. It is probably the most famous building in Basel. If you ask any swiss person what is renowned for Basel a lot of them would say the Basel Münser.

If you like old and historical Buildings the Basler Münster Catherdrale invites you for a stay and a tour through the cathedral.

2. ART MUSEUM BASEL

If you love art then the Art museum in Basel is a must-visit for you. The art museum is close to the center in Basel and therefore it is easy to get there either by public transportation or car. The Art Museum in Basel is the oldest art collection in the world and it is amazing to see the number of great artists. I wish I would have a little bit of their creativity. At the Art Museum, you can find over 4000 paintings, sculptures, and more different art. If you have a specific ticket for public transportation you may get a discount on the entry ticket. Therefore check that before paying the full amount.

3. ZOO BASEL

The Basel zoo is one of the most beautiful zoos in Switzerland and one of the biggest as well. It is always worth visiting Zoo Basel. I was there 2 times and it was always a cool place to be. Especially for children, it can create a lot of great memories. The amount of different animals is insane.

Usually, I’m not recommending going to the zoo, because the animals are not in their nature where they belong, but in the end, a zoo is still a beautiful place and it is fantastic to see how many species our planet has.

4. RHEINFÄHRE

The Rhein is one of the biggest rivers in Switzerland and it is one of the most popular ones as well. The Rhein welcomes you to walk along the river and have a relaxing time. If you even want to extend this experience you should go to the Rheinfäre. It is a lovely little boat ride to the other side of the city. It is a more tourist attraction but for sure worth to do it once. The little boats are charming and it is great to take a rest from walking through the city as well.

5. MARKTHALLE BASEL

After a long exhausting day in Basel, it is always great to have something to eat. The perfect place to eat something is the Markthalle in Basel. It is a food court with a lot of different food from all over the world. You can find there almost all kinds of food. If you want to eat a little snack or try food from other cultures the Markthalle Basel is the perfect place for you.

TRADITIONELL SWISS FOOD.

If you are in Basel to enjoy traditional swiss food, then I also have a few recommendations for you.

HASENBURG, RÖSTI

The restaurant Hasenburg is known for its swiss dishes. You can find classic swiss foods and the atmosphere in the charming restaurant is insane. Personally. I can recommend you the Hash browns with eggs. The Hasenburg will provide you with affordable swiss food and it is located directly in the center of Basel.

WALLISER KANNE

Another classic swiss food restaurant is the Walliser Kanne. Here you can find a lot of traditional swiss dishes as well. It is a more expensive place to eat, but the location is insane and will perfectly show you the charm of the classic old swiss wood houses.

BASLER LÄCKERLI

The last one on this list is not really a restaurant. It is more something for dessert or a cafe. The traditional Basler Läckerli is similar to a cookie but tastes very different. I can’t even describe how it tastes. If you never have eaten Basler Läckerli it is a must for you on your next stay in Basel. You can find Basler Läckerli in almost every grocery store in Basel, but I would recommend going to the official store of Basler Läckerli. They even have a coffee above the store. therefore you have the perfect place to try the Basler Läckerli while drinking your coffee and taking a break from the crowded city.

Have you ever tried basler läckerli? Let me know in the comments below or on Instagram.
