Introduction
If you’re planning a trip to Mexico, you’re probably wondering how much you’ll need to save up for your adventure. Mexico is a diverse country, with a range of destinations, cultures, and prices. In this blog post, I’ll be sharing my personal expenses from my month-long trip to Mexico in January 2023, as well as some tips on how to budget for your own trip.
Accommodation:
The biggest chunk of my expenses went towards accommodation. I spent a total of $1,300 for the month, which averages out to about $42 per night. I stayed mostly in Airbnb rentals, with only one stay in a hostel in Cancun. Prices varied greatly depending on the location, but overall I found Airbnb to be a great option, especially because i was not able to rest too much in hostels.
Transportation:
Getting around Mexico was relatively cheap, with my transportation expenses coming out to $110 for the month. I mostly used Uber for short rides and a for long-distance rides i used the public buses. Uber was a convenient and affordable option for getting around the cities, and the long-distance buses were comfortable and faster than public transportation. If you want to save more money you should use the public transportation instead of uber. (Uber was for me not available in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, therefore i walked a lot or used Taxi if not other possible.)
Food and Groceries:
Another big expense was food, which came out to between $500 and $600 for the month. Mexico is famous for its delicious and affordable street food, so I made sure to try as many different mexican meals as I could. I also bought groceries from local markets to save money on meals. Eating out at restaurants was a bit more expensive, but still affordable. If you want to save money on food or groceries you should defintely eat more streetfood and try to reduce classic restaurant visits. I personally went a lot to restaurant, because i was walking a lot on my trip to discover things and therefore i was happy to have a place where i was able to sit down comfortable.
Activities:
I spent $300 for activities, which covered entrance fees to ruins, museums, and other tourist attractions. I visited the Tulum ruins, went to Islands as Isla Mujeres and Cozumel. I also visited the Dzibilchaltun ruins, the city of “Izamal” and went on daily tours to cenotes and to coba. I also booked a submarine tour which was by far the most expensive activity. (I would recommend you to go snorkeling instead of the submarine tour. Snorkeling is a lot cheaper and in my opinion even a better experience)
Total expenses:
All in all, I spent between $2,210 and $2,310 for the whole month. This averages out to about $72 to $74 per day.
Tips for Budgeting Your Trip:
- Accommodation: Look into different types of accommodation and compare prices. Hostels and Airbnb rentals can be a great way to save money.
- Transportation: Public transportation is often cheaper than renting a car or taking taxis. Research your options before you go.
- Food: Mexico has a lot of affordable street food options. Try to eat out at local eateries and markets for cheap and authentic meals.
- Activities: Look for free or low-cost activities, such as visiting local parks and markets. Plan ahead and book tours and activities in advance to get the best prices.
By following these tips, you can have a great time exploring Mexico without breaking the bank. I hope this breakdown of my personal expenses helps you plan your own budget-friendly trip to this beautiful country.”

Conclusion:
In this first month of my world trip, I didn’t care about my personal expenses too much and I just did what I wanted to do. It is definitely possible to reduce expenses a lot by staying more in hostels than in Airbnb, taking more public transportation than Uber or taxis and you save also money when you eating more street food than going to restaurants.
